NICRN Primary Care has been involved in recruiting General Practices and patients for the GARFIELD study since December 2011. The purpose of the GARFIELD registry is to assess the management and outcome of patients with a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Northern Ireland (NI) practices have been participating in Cohort 2 which involves male and female patients newly diagnosed with AF with at least one additional risk factor for stroke. While Cohort 2 will be closing on 30th April 2013 having reached its target of 10,500 patients, Cohort 3 will be opening for recruitment immediately on 1 May. NI patients participating in Cohort 2 will be followed up every 4 months until 30 April 2015.
Currently over 21,000 newly-diagnosed AF patients have been enrolled in 30 countries which makes GARFIELD one of the largest prospective observational studies in the world which is a remarkable achievement.
This is an extremely exciting time for the registry and Primary Care is delighted to report that NI reached target for Cohort 2 and have been asked to extend recruitment here into Cohort 3. The researchers have sent their sincere thanks to all the sites for their invaluable contribution to the research programme.
In Cohort 3 the study will welcome four new countries to GARFIELD: Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United States and we look forward to continuing our participation with this important research collaboration.
